Christopher Alexander has joined Hyyve, a platform that connects home sellers and real estate agents before the listing process, after spending almost four years as the president of RE/MAX Canada. He sat down with The Peak to talk about the real estate market.
What is the biggest misconception about your industry?
That all agents provide the same level of service. In reality, they vary in expertise, strategies, and overall value. Sellers should be able to compare agents based on more than price.
Are real estate agents overpaid?
No. But homeowners should connect with the best agent based on value.
What problem is Hyyve working to solve?
Inefficiencies and a lack of transparency in the real estate agent selection process. We’re creating a marketplace where agents can bid to represent sellers, ensuring that homeowners get the best value while agents access high-quality leads.
By asking agents to bid on listings, will commission rates come down?
They could. It is ultimately up to the agent to decide what they would like to offer in terms of their bid and service offerings, creating a competitive environment that benefits both parties.
What challenges do you see for the industry in the coming year?
Uncertainty and inconsistency in geopolitics. These market dynamics make it more important than ever to hire a strong, full-time agent who can get you the best deal possible.
What advice do you have for sellers and buyers?
For sellers, only list when you’re ready to move. “Testing” the market adds to days listed and can stigmatize your property. For buyers, don’t overextend yourself. There are lots of great opportunities at many price points — try not to get caught up in the emotional part of the transaction.
Is there a book you’ve read recently that you’d recommend?
The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel.
